Imiquimod 5% cream is an immune response modifier, normally used for conditions such as actinic keratosis and some skin cancers. It also has a role in scar management, particularly after a keloid has been surgically removed.
It works by stimulating the immune system to help regulate healing, reducing the inflammation that drives abnormal scar formation, and lowering the chance of the keloid returning after excision.
How it is used
For scar management the cream is applied topically to the treated area, usually after a procedure to remove a keloid. A typical regime is:
- Applied at night, daily, for six to eight weeks
- Washed off in the morning to reduce irritation
- Monitored for redness, peeling or mild itching, which are common and usually settle with guidance
Treatment is always tailored to your skin type and the severity of the scar.
Timing is what matters here
Imiquimod is most effective when used after surgical removal of a keloid. It is much less effective applied to an existing scar that has not been excised.
Not everyone is a candidate. Dr Buckley assesses your skin history, the type of scar and what you want from treatment before recommending it.
