Laser treatment

Reduces the redness, pain and itch in a scar. It does not usually make the scar smaller, so it is rarely used on its own.

Laser treatment targets scar tissue with light energy. For keloids and hypertrophic scars the laser used is a vascular laser — a pulsed dye laser, in this clinic an NLite — which works on the overactive blood vessels that give a scar its red or purple colour.

What laser will and will not do

Our lasers will not usually reduce the size of a scar. What they do well is reduce redness, pain and itch. For that reason laser is rarely used alone, and is normally combined with radiosurgical excision, cryosurgery or intralesional steroids.

What it helps with

  • Redness. Calms the overactive blood vessels behind the red or purple tone.
  • Comfort. Reduces itch and discomfort in the scar.
  • Texture. Encourages healthier skin regeneration for a softer feel.

What treatment involves

  • Minimally invasive
  • Minimal pain and discomfort
  • Little or no downtime
  • Gradual, natural-looking change

It suits a range of skin types, but is especially well suited to red keloids and hypertrophic scars on lighter skin.

At your consultation

Dr Buckley will assess the type and condition of the scar, go through your medical history and treatment goals, and set out a realistic plan. Depending on the size, type and age of the scar, that plan may well combine laser with another treatment — see combination treatments.
