Silicone gel sheets create a protective barrier over the scar, keep the skin hydrated and help regulate collagen production. That helps flatten and soften a raised scar, reduce redness and itch, and improve its texture over time.
They are non-invasive, self-adhesive, washable and reusable, and you can buy them from a pharmacy or online without a prescription.
How to use them
Sheets such as CICA-CARE can be cut to the size and shape of the scar. Build up wear time gradually:
| Days | Wear time |
|---|---|
| Days 1–2 | 4 hours a day or night |
| Days 3–4 | 8 hours a day or night |
| After that | Increase by 2 hours a day until you reach at least 12 hours |
| Ideally | 24 hours a day |
This takes months, not weeks
It can take many months of daily use before you see an improvement, and they do not work for everyone. They work best at preventing a keloid or hypertrophic scar when started as early as possible, while the scar is still forming.
Silicone gels are also available, but they do not work as well as the sheets.
Who they suit
Silicone therapy is worth trying for:
- Surgical scars
- Caesarean section scars
- Acne or chickenpox scars
- Burns and injury scars
- Keloids from ear piercings or tattoos
They may help reduce the appearance of small scars and keloids that have been present for less than two years. For anything larger or older, they work better alongside another treatment — see combination treatments.
Common questions
How long before I see results?
Some people see improvement within three to six months of consistent use. Results vary with the size, age and type of the scar.
Can I wear them under clothing?
Yes. They are discreet and flexible, and can be worn day or night.
Are there side effects?
They are generally well tolerated. Mild irritation happens occasionally and usually settles quickly.
